A Brief History of the English Tea Party
The tradition of afternoon tea is one of England’s most beloved social customs. While tea had been enjoyed in Britain since the 1600s, the modern afternoon tea is generally associated with Anna, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the early Victorian era. During the 1840s, dinner was often served quite late in the evening, leaving a long gap between lunch and dinner. To satisfy her hunger, the Duchess began enjoying tea with light refreshments in the afternoon. Soon she invited friends to join her, and a new social tradition was born.
As afternoon tea grew in popularity, it became an elegant social gathering. Guests enjoyed fine teas accompanied by delicate finger sandwiches, warm scones with jam and cream, and an assortment of cakes and pastries.
